Frequently Asked Questions

  • Music therapy is the use of music to achieve non-music goals. It is a clinical, evidence-based service that only certified Music Therapists (MT-BCs) can practice. Music therapy is not the same as sound frequency therapy, sound healing, or music education. It is similar to physical, occupational, and recreational therapy, in that music interventions are used specifically to address a physical, emotional, or social goal.

  • Trick question! Every music therapy session looks different, depending on what you hope to gain. Here are some things you can expect, though:

    • Music interventions (activities) tailored to your interests, like songwriting, active music making on instruments, discussing song lyrics, playing percussion, musical games, and even progressive muscle relaxation with live music.

    • Songs that you enjoy- a favorite artist, band, composer, collection of songs, soundtrack, playlist, etcetera. These will be incorporated into sessions by your music therapist.

    • A space to grow, reflect, and challenge yourself, all while having fun with music.

  • Absolutely not! You do not need to have musical skill to benefit from music therapy.

If you like music, you are qualified to have music therapy services. We will never force you to sing or play an instrument if you do not want to; in other words, engaging in music during sessions can be passive or active. We will always encourage participation and believe you do not have to “sound good” to benefit from music therapy.

  • If you are looking for a service that helps with a goal, objective, or hemisphere of living (improving speech/communication, having a space for self-expression and autonomy, support in older age/end of life, etc.), music therapy is for you.

If you are looking for weekly instruction-based lessons to learn technique, music, and theory on the piano, private lessons are for you.

  • If you are a family or individual looking for music therapy for yourself or a loved one, In-Home Music Therapy is for you. These services will be one-on-one and designed for your needs alone.

If you are a company, nonprofit, assisted living facility, etc., Contracted Music Therapy is designed to send our music therapists to your establishment to provide services to your patrons. The terms of these services (one-on-one sessions vs. group sessions) would be determined between the facility and MT-BC as indicated.

NOTE: If you desire music therapy for a loved one in a nursing home/assisted living facility that 1) does not currently have its own contract with New Song Wellness and 2) cannot establish a contract in the future, please reach out to hello@newsongwellnessllc.com to determine the best course of action. Third-party music therapy services may be subject to each facility.

  • At New Song Wellness, we strive to provide top-notch services for all people, regardless of abilities, diagnoses, or other needs. Both Private and Adaptive lessons are taught with the same curriculum and for the same rates- the only difference is the pacing and teaching method.

For individuals with or without diagnoses (e.g., autism, ADHD, Down Syndrome, etc.) who request accommodations (e.g., Braille encoded notes, sound sensitivities, etc.) or an adjusted teaching method, please select Adaptive Music Lessons.

For all other individuals, please select Private Piano Lessons.

We ask for this specification so our instructors can prepare for adjusted pacing and provide accommodations. Otherwise, lessons are lessons, and all are encouraged to learn!

  • Music therapy sessions and private lessons are typically conducted once a week at a designated time and place and last 30 to 60 minutes.

Scheduling is ultimately determined between therapist/instructor and client; some may choose multiple times a week, while others may stick with a weekly schedule.

  • We offer flexible pricing for music therapy services based on length of session and frequency of services. Billing occurs on a monthly basis and will always be transparent with no hidden costs.

Please visit the Contact page and fill out the Intake Form for specific rates, or email us at hello@newsongwellnessllc.com.

    • For effective music therapy AND private piano lesson outcomes, consistency is key.

    • If conflicts arise on your scheduled appointment day and time, please let your therapist/instructor know within 24 hours of scheduled appointment. We will do our best to reschedule with you. Please note rescheduling may depend on your therapist/instructor’s availability that week.

    • We kindly ask for 24-hour notice for cancelled appointments. Cancellations or requests for reschedule outside of the 24-hour notice will be charged at the appointment rate.
